Greywater Systems at Home: What Is Safe to Reuse and What Is Not
The laundry to landscape setup is cheap and usually permit exempt, and the rule that matters most is about time, not filters

A four person household can send about 1,000 gallons of greywater down the drain in a week, according to the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. That is water you already paid for. Most of it is barely dirty. And in a dry month, it is sitting right there in your laundry room doing nothing.
A greywater system moves that water from the drain to the landscape instead. Done right, it is boring, legal, and useful. Done wrong, it salts your soil, breeds mosquitoes, or gets you a notice from the county.
The good news is that the rules are short and the physics are simple. Here is what counts as greywater, what it can safely irrigate, what it must never touch, and where the real limits are.
What is a greywater system, and what counts as greywater?
A greywater system is plumbing that routes used water from low risk household fixtures to landscape irrigation instead of the sewer or septic tank. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension defines greywater as wastewater from showers, bathtubs, handwashing lavatories, clothes washing machines, and sinks that are not used for food preparation or for disposing of hazardous material.
Here is what does and does not qualify:
Greywater: shower, bathtub, bathroom sink, clothes washer.
Not greywater: toilet, kitchen sink, dishwasher. Arizona's rule excludes all three by name.
Not greywater, even though it looks clean: any load containing diapers or garments from someone with an infectious illness. Arizona requires that water go to the sewer or septic system unless it is disinfected first.
The part most guides skip is why the kitchen sink is out. People assume it is about grease. It is really about load. Texas A&M groups food preparation sink wastewater with blackwater because it carries much higher concentrations of nitrogen, organic matter, and human pathogens. Feed that into a mulch bed and you get odor, flies, and a soil biology problem instead of irrigation. New Mexico State University Extension also warns off dishwasher water specifically, because of the sodium and bleach in the detergent.
What is the difference between greywater and blackwater?
Blackwater is anything with toilet waste or food preparation waste in it. Greywater is everything else that goes down a household drain. That single line is the whole legal distinction in most state codes, and it is the reason greywater rules can be so much looser than septic rules.
Be honest about what greywater actually is, though. It is not clean water. It carries skin bacteria, hair, lint, soap, body oils, and whatever was on your clothes. NMSU Extension notes that roughly 65 percent of domestic wastewater is greywater, which tells you how much volume is involved, not how safe it is. Treat it as irrigation water with a short shelf life, and you will make good decisions about it.
Why can't you store greywater for more than 24 hours?
Because the bacteria already in it multiply fast, the oxygen runs out, and it turns septic and starts to smell. Both NMSU Extension and Texas A&M put the limit at less than one day. Oregon writes it into the rule: EPA's summary of Oregon's regulation says untreated Type 1 greywater must be stored 24 hours or less and have no objectionable odor.
The part most guides skip is why the rain barrel instinct fails here. Rainwater is nearly sterile and has almost nothing in it for microbes to eat, which is why collecting rainwater for emergencies is a storage project and greywater is not. Greywater arrives warm, full of skin cells, lint, food particles, and soap. A barrel of it is not storage. It is an incubator. That is why a good greywater system has no tank at all and moves water to the soil the same hour it is made.
If you genuinely want to store greywater or flush toilets with it, you have crossed into treatment territory, and the numbers get serious. Oregon's Type 2 greywater requires secondary treatment and oxidation to 10 mg/L or less for both BOD and total suspended solids. Type 3, the tier that allows sprinkler irrigation and toilet flushing, adds disinfection, a total coliform limit of 2.2 organisms per 100 mL as a 7 day median, and monitoring at least 3 times a week. That is a wastewater plant in your side yard. For almost every household, the answer is to use the water the day you make it and to keep the water you actually intend to hold onto in food grade water storage containers on a separate system.
What is a laundry to landscape system, and why start there?
Start with laundry to landscape because it is the only common greywater setup that does not touch your household drain plumbing. The washing machine's own internal pump pushes the water out through a hose you install, so there is no cutting into drain lines, no new pump, and no tank. California allows clothes washer systems to irrigate landscape without a construction permit as long as they meet the conditions in Chapter 16A of the plumbing code.
The design guidelines that counties publish for these systems are unusually specific. Santa Cruz County's laundry to landscape design guidelines call for:
1 inch polyethylene tubing as the distribution line, with barbed tees stepping down to half inch outlets.
A minimum of 6 and a maximum of 18 outlets per zone, so the pump is not asked to do more than it can.
A three way valve mounted on the wall behind the washer, so you can send any load back to the sewer.
At least 2 inches of mulch, rock, soil, or a solid shield over every release point.
No tanks and no added pumps in a clothes washer system.
Setbacks of at least 1.5 feet from the property line and 100 feet from water supply wells, streams, and lakes.
Caution on sites with slopes greater than 30 percent.
The part most guides skip is that the three way valve is not a convenience. It is the safety device. It is how you handle diaper loads, bleach loads, and the week somebody in the house has a stomach bug. Texas A&M's guidance is blunt about that last one: if a household member has a contagious illness, it is wise to divert greywater away from the system entirely. A system you cannot switch off in five seconds is a system you will end up misusing.

Each outlet ends in a mulch basin under at least 2 inches of cover. The mulch does the filtering and keeps the water out of reach.
Which soaps and detergents are safe for a greywater system?
Look for products that are free of sodium and boron. Those two are the real problem, not "chemicals" as a category. Texas A&M advises avoiding detergents with significant amounts of phosphorus, sodium, or boron. University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources says the same and adds bleach to the list, recommending products that are biodegradable, non toxic, salt free, and boron free, naming brands such as Oasis, ECOS, and Vaska as examples.
Boron is worth a number. UC ANR puts boron sensitive landscape plants at a preference of no more than 0.5 to 1.0 mg/L, moderately tolerant plants at 1.0 to 2.0 mg/L, and tolerant plants at 2.0 to 10.0 mg/L. That is a narrow window, and borax based laundry boosters blow straight through it.
What to keep out of a greywater line:
Borax and any laundry booster built on it.
Chlorine bleach.
Liquid fabric softener, and detergents with softener built in. NMSU calls both out by name.
Automatic dishwasher detergent, and dishwasher water generally.
Anything with hazardous chemicals in it. Arizona's permit specifically bars antifreeze, mothballs, and solvents from greywater.
The part most guides skip is that "biodegradable" on the front of the bottle tells you nothing about salt. Sodium is an element. It does not break down, ever. It moves into your soil, stays there, and slowly degrades soil structure by displacing calcium and magnesium on clay particles. Powdered detergents are the usual culprits because sodium salts are cheap fillers. One more detail from Texas A&M: greywater tends to run slightly alkaline, so keep it away from acid loving plants such as blueberries, azaleas, and rhododendrons.
What should greywater never touch?
Anything you eat raw, and anything whose edible part touches soil. UC ANR's exclusion list is specific: asparagus, beets, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce and other salad greens, garlic, onions, potatoes, melons, squash, bush beans, radish, turnip, unstaked tomatoes, and strawberries. NMSU puts it more simply: root crops eaten uncooked should not be irrigated with greywater.
Two more limits worth knowing. Use greywater on well established plants, not on seedlings or young transplants, which both NMSU and Texas A&M recommend. And never plumb greywater into a toilet tank. NMSU warns that this creates a backsiphoning path into your fresh water supply. If you want to flush with it, pour it into the bowl.
The part most guides skip is that states genuinely disagree here, and the disagreement is instructive. Arizona's rule says do not surface irrigate any food producing plant, with an exception carved out for citrus and nut trees, where the edible part hangs well above the ground. Oregon, on the other hand, allows untreated Type 1 greywater for subsurface irrigation of food crops. Same water, opposite answers, because the delivery method is what actually changes the risk. Which brings us to the next question.

Salad greens and root crops stay on clean water. Fruit trees, shade trees, and ornamentals are where greywater earns its keep.
Should greywater go on the surface or under it?
Under it, always, and never through a sprinkler. Arizona bans spray irrigation with greywater outright because of the risk of inhaling the mist or having it drift off site. Texas A&M says the same: spray distribution is forbidden. UC ANR's instruction is to let the water enter the landscape at the dripline of the plant, under a good cover of mulch.
Soil is not just a hiding place for the water. It is the treatment step. Texas A&M describes what happens once greywater soaks in: physical filtration, chemical adsorption and transformation, and biological degradation and predation all work together to knock down pathogens. Two inches of mulch and a few inches of soil do more for you than any filter you could bolt onto the line.
Practical notes for the outlet end:
Skip standard drip emitters. Lint and hair clog them almost immediately, which is exactly why laundry to landscape systems use open barbed outlets in mulch basins instead.
Keep the ground flat where water lands. NMSU advises applying greywater only to flat areas where runoff is unlikely.
Keep surface pooling to a minimum. Arizona's permit requires it, and standing greywater is a mosquito problem as well as a contact problem.
If you do have any tank or surge box in the system, Arizona requires it be covered, sealed, and secured against rodents and mosquitoes.
Do you need a permit for a greywater system?
It depends on your state, and often on your county, and the federal government is not the one deciding. EPA states plainly that it "does not require or restrict any type of reuse," and that states hold primary regulatory authority over water reuse. EPA maintains a tool called REUSExplorer that catalogs each state's rules, and it is the fastest honest way to find out where you stand.
Three examples of how different the answers are:
California: a clothes washer system needs no construction permit if it meets the Chapter 16A conditions. Larger or more complex systems do.
Arizona: household systems under 400 gallons per day fall under a Type 1 general permit that is granted automatically as long as you follow the listed conditions, including labeling any pressurized greywater pipe so it cannot be confused with a drinking water line.
Oregon: three tiers, with untreated Type 1 limited to subsurface irrigation and 24 hour turnover, and monitoring requirements that step up above 300 gallons per day.
The part most guides skip is the paperwork tail. An unpermitted greywater system that was fine in practice can still surface as an unpermitted alteration during a home sale, a refinance appraisal, or an insurance inspection. Ten minutes with your county building or environmental health department before you buy tubing is cheap insurance. Ask two questions: does this system need a permit, and are there setbacks I need to respect.
When to get professional help
Call a licensed plumber before you cut into any drain line. A laundry to landscape system that hangs off the washer standpipe is a homeowner project in most places. A shower or bathroom sink system is real plumbing, with real cross connection risk, and the failure mode is contaminated drinking water inside your own house.
Also get help in these situations:
You are on a septic system. Diverting flow changes how the tank and drainfield behave. Ask your local health department first.
Someone in the household is immunocompromised, pregnant, or has a contagious illness. Divert to the sewer and talk to your doctor before restarting.
Someone swallows laundry detergent or a detergent pod. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, free and open 24 hours. If the person is unconscious, seizing, or not breathing, call 911 instead.
You are considering drinking it. Do not. This is not a treatment gap you can close with a backyard filter, and there is no emergency version of this advice. CDC notes that recycled water intended for drinking must meet the same water quality regulations as any other drinking water source, which takes a wastewater plant, an advanced treatment plant, a drinking water plant, and continuous testing. Your mulch basin is none of those things.
Frequently asked questions
Can you drink greywater in an emergency?
No. Greywater is irrigation water and nothing else. It carries skin bacteria, soap, and whatever was on your laundry, and household filters are not designed to make wash water potable. CDC's description of recycled drinking water involves a wastewater treatment plant, an advanced treatment plant, a drinking water plant, and ongoing regulatory testing. If you need emergency drinking water, work from stored water or a known freshwater source and disinfect that instead.
Can greywater be stored in a rain barrel?
No, not untreated. NMSU and Texas A&M both cap untreated greywater at less than one day, and Oregon's rule sets 24 hours with no objectionable odor. Unlike rainwater, greywater is warm and full of organic material, so bacteria multiply quickly and it turns septic. Design your system to move water to the soil the same day it is made.
Is greywater safe for a vegetable garden?
Only for some crops, and the rules vary by state. Skip anything eaten raw or whose edible part touches soil, including lettuce, carrots, beets, radishes, strawberries, and unstaked tomatoes. Arizona prohibits surface irrigation of food plants entirely, except citrus and nut trees. Oregon allows subsurface irrigation of food crops with untreated greywater. Check your own state before you plan a bed around it.
Do I need a permit for a laundry to landscape greywater system?
Often no, but you have to confirm it locally. Boron accumulates too, and the tolerance window for landscape plants is narrow at 0.5 to 10.0 mg/L depending on species. Using salt free detergent, rotating in a good rain or clean water soak now and then, and spreading the water over a larger area all reduce the risk.

A greywater system is one of the few preparedness projects that pays you back every single week, drought or no drought. It is not glamorous. It is a valve, some tubing, and a pile of wood chips. But it means the water you already bought waters something before it leaves your property, and it means you have practiced moving water by hand before you ever have to.
Know what it is not, though. It is landscape irrigation. It will never be drinking water, and it should never be stored. If you need water you can drink, it comes from stored water or a known freshwater source, disinfected with a method that works without power. Get those two things right and the rest of it is just plumbing.
You never know, but you can always be ready.
