Home Fire Escape Plan: Smoke Alarm Placement, Two Ways Out, and the Two-Minute Window
Your sofa is basically solid petroleum, and that one fact changes how long you have to get everyone out.


Key points
A modern home fire escape plan has to account for speed. UL's Fire Safety Research Institute measured rooms furnished with synthetic materials reaching flashover in 3 minutes 40 seconds to 4 minutes 50 seconds. Rooms furnished with natural materials took more than 30 minutes.
The U.S. Fire Administration puts it simply: once the smoke alarm sounds, you may have less than 2 minutes to get everyone out.
Alarms go inside every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level including the basement. Keep them at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance and at least 4 inches off a wall or corner.
Test monthly, change 9 volt batteries at least once a year, and replace the whole alarm at 10 years. NFPA says 99 percent of U.S. residents have smoke alarms, but a third never test them.
Children often sleep through a standard tone alarm. In a randomized trial of 176 kids aged 5 to 12, a voice alarm woke 86 to 91 percent of them versus 53 percent for the tone alarm.
Of everything on a preparedness list, a house fire is the one most likely to actually happen to your family. Not a grid collapse. Not a hurricane, unless you live where they land. A fire that starts in a kitchen or a dryer or a phone charger on a bed, in an ordinary house, on an ordinary night.
And the thing that makes a home fire escape plan urgent now is not that fires are more common. It is that the inside of your house is different than it was 40 years ago. The sofa is polyurethane foam. The rug is polypropylene. The bookshelf is particleboard with a vinyl skin. All of it is essentially solid petroleum, and it burns like it.
That one fact reframes the entire subject. You are not planning for the fire your grandparents planned for.
How much time do you really have to escape a house fire?
Minutes, not tens of minutes. UL's Fire Safety Research Institute ran side by side burns of two identical rooms, one furnished with natural materials and one with modern synthetics. In their comparison of natural and synthetic home furnishings, the synthetic rooms reached flashover in 3 minutes 40 seconds to 4 minutes 50 seconds. The natural furnishing rooms took more than 30 minutes.
Flashover is the moment everything in the room ignites at once, when surfaces exposed to fire gases above roughly 600 degrees C (about 1,100 degrees F) reach ignition nearly simultaneously. It is not a stage you escape from. It is the deadline.
The U.S. Fire Administration translates that into a household number: when you hear a smoke alarm, you may have less than 2 minutes to get everyone outside and safe. Two minutes is not enough time to figure anything out. It is only enough time to execute something you already know.
The part most guides skip: this is exactly why the alarm matters more than the plan. The plan only starts when the alarm goes off. Every minute the alarm is late is a minute subtracted from a budget of about 2.
Where should smoke alarms go in a home fire escape plan?
Inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home including the basement. That is the baseline from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and it is more alarms than most houses have.
Count it out for a typical 3 bedroom, 2 story house with a basement. Three bedrooms, plus one in the upstairs hallway outside them, plus one on the main floor, plus one in the basement. That is 6, minimum. Most homes I have been in have 2.
Placement details that people get wrong, per the CPSC and the Tennessee State Fire Marshal's placement guidance:

The 4 inch and 12 inch rules exist because of dead air. Corners where a wall meets a ceiling trap a pocket of still air, and smoke can flow past it. The 10 foot kitchen rule exists for a different reason: an alarm that screams every time you sear a steak is an alarm that gets its battery pulled, and the USFA is blunt that disabling an alarm or removing the battery can be a deadly mistake.
One more that matters more than any of the above: interconnect them. When one sounds, they all sound. A basement alarm doing its job at 2 a.m. is useless if nobody upstairs can hear it. If your house is not wired for it, wireless interconnected alarms exist and the USFA lists radio frequency models starting around $40 each.

Ionization or photoelectric: which smoke alarm is better?
Get both, either as two separate alarms or as one dual sensor unit. They detect different fires, and the gap between them is not small.
The CPSC explains the mechanism plainly. Ionization alarms respond quickly to flaming fires that throw off heat and smaller sub-micron combustion particles. Photoelectric alarms respond more quickly to smoldering fires that produce larger particles. Then comes the number that decides the argument:
In a fast flaming fire, an ionization alarm may be seconds faster than a photoelectric alarm.
In a smoldering fire, a photoelectric alarm can be many minutes faster than an ionization alarm.
Seconds versus many minutes. That asymmetry is why the USFA recommends homes have both technologies, either as separate alarms or in dual sensor units. Dual sensor alarms start around $24 according to the USFA's cost list, against about $6 for a basic single sensor unit.
The honest limit: smoldering fires are the ones that start in upholstery, in bedding, in a wall from bad wiring, and those are disproportionately the ones that kill people at night. If you are only going to upgrade the alarms in bedrooms, make those the photoelectric or dual sensor ones.
How often should you test a smoke alarm, and what does the chirping mean?
Test every alarm once a month, replace 9 volt batteries at least once a year, and replace the alarm itself at 10 years from the date of manufacture. All three are CPSC and USFA guidance, and all three are separate things that people collapse into one.
That last one gets skipped constantly. A smoke alarm's sensor degrades. A 15 year old alarm that chirps when you press test is not proof it will detect smoke, only proof that its horn and battery work. Flip it over. The manufacture date is printed on the back. If it is more than 10 years old, it is done, and no battery fixes that.
What the sounds mean:
Continuous loud alarm: get out. Do not investigate first.
Single chirp every 30 to 60 seconds: low battery on a replaceable battery unit. Change it.
Chirping that keeps going after a fresh battery: usually end of life on a sealed unit. Check the manufacture date. Replace the alarm.
Sealed 10 year lithium battery alarms solve the annual battery chore and the 3 a.m. chirp at once. The tradeoff is you cannot silence a nuisance alarm by pulling a battery, which is arguably the feature. Note the tradeoff honestly: they are not "install and forget." You still test monthly, and you still replace the whole unit at 10 years.
The scale of the gap here is worth sitting with. The NFPA reports that 99 percent of U.S. residents have smoke alarms but a third never test them. And in the USFA's Fatal Fires in Residential Buildings report covering 2018 to 2020, smoke alarms were not present in 24 percent of fatal fires in occupied residential buildings. Alarms were present in 33 percent of fatal fires, against 44 percent of nonfatal ones.
How do you draw a home fire escape plan with two ways out?
Sketch the floor plan, mark every door and window, and then find 2 ways out of every single room. That is the core of the U.S. Fire Administration's home fire escape plan guidance, and the word "every" is doing the work.
The steps, in order:
Draw a map of your home, including all doors and windows. Rough is fine. Let a kid do it, because whoever draws it learns it.
Find 2 ways out of every room. Usually a door and a window. Some rooms will not have two, and that is worth knowing now rather than at 3 a.m.
Check that doors and windows are not blocked. Open every escape window right now. Painted-shut windows and window air conditioners are the two most common failures.
Pick an outside meeting place in front of your home. A specific object, not a general direction. The mailbox. The neighbor's oak. Something you can say in one word.
Practice with everyone in the home, starting the drill by pushing the smoke alarm test button so the practice sounds like the real thing.
Once out, stay out. Go to the meeting place and call the fire department from there. Nobody goes back in for a pet, a phone, or a person. That is what the fire department is for, and telling them who is missing and where they sleep is far more useful than going in yourself.
Twice a year is the practical floor for drills, and at least one of them should be at night. Daytime practice teaches the route. Nighttime practice teaches you that the hallway looks completely different in the dark, that you cannot find your glasses, and that the kid in the back bedroom does not wake up. Which brings us to the research that surprises most parents.
Why do children sleep through smoke alarms?
Because the standard high pitched tone is a poor match for how kids sleep, and the effect size is enormous. Researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital ran a randomized trial with 176 children aged 5 to 12 and published the results in The Journal of Pediatrics in October 2018.
Woke up: 86 to 91 percent with a voice alarm, versus 53 percent with the standard tone alarm.
Actually escaped the bedroom: 84 to 86 percent with voice, versus 51 percent with tone.
Median time to escape: 18 to 28 seconds with voice, versus 282 seconds with the tone alarm.
That last line is the one to read twice. 282 seconds is 4 minutes 42 seconds. Against a room that can flash over in under 4 minutes, that is not a delay. That is the whole margin.
A sleeping child was about 3 times more likely to be woken by a voice alarm than by the tone. The researchers also tested whether using the child's own first name helped, and it did not add a significant improvement over a voice message without the name.
What to do with that, practically:
Consider a voice or combination voice-and-tone alarm in kids' bedrooms specifically.
Assume in your plan that a child will not self-rescue. Assign an adult to each child by name, and assign a backup.
Actually test it. Run one night drill with the alarm and see whether your kid wakes. Most parents have never checked, and the answer changes the plan.
Drills go better when kids already understand what they are for. I wrote up the age by age version of that conversation in talking to kids about emergency preparedness without fear.
What does closing your bedroom door actually do in a fire?
It buys survivable air, and the measured difference is not subtle. UL's Fire Safety Research Institute ran the Close Before You Doze experiments comparing bedrooms with open and closed doors during a house fire.
Temperature: under 100 degrees F in the closed room, against 1,000 degrees F or more in the open room.
Carbon monoxide: roughly 100 ppm in the closed bedroom, against 10,000 ppm in the open one.
A hundred times less carbon monoxide. As FSRI's Steve Kerber put it, a person could be alive in a room with a closed door much longer.
Two applications, and they are different:
Sleep with bedroom doors closed. It costs nothing and it is the single highest leverage habit in this entire article. If the closed door bothers you because you want to hear the kids, that is exactly the problem interconnected alarms solve.
Close doors behind you as you leave. Every door you shut on the way out slows the fire's spread and protects the path behind you. The USFA says the same thing for apartments: leave, and close the door behind you.
And if you are trapped: close the door, seal the gap at the bottom with bedding or towels, get to a window, and make yourself visible. Call 911 and tell them exactly which room you are in. The closed door is what buys the time for that call to matter.
The other piece of physics worth teaching: crawl low. Smoke and hot gases rise, so the breathable air and the survivable temperature are near the floor. Practice this in the daytime drill with kids, because it feels ridiculous until it is a reflex.

Do you need an escape ladder for a second story bedroom?
If a second floor bedroom's only other exit is a window, then yes, because the USFA rule is 2 ways out of every room and a window 15 feet above concrete is not a way out on its own.
Buying one is the easy part. Here is the part almost nobody does:
Store it in the room it serves, not in a hall closet. A ladder in the garage protects the garage.
Check that it actually fits your window. Sill depth and window height vary, and some ladders will not hook over a deep sill or a casement frame.
Practice deploying it once, in daylight, from a ground floor window or a low deck. Unfolding a chain ladder for the first time in the dark, in smoke, is not a plan.
Decide in advance who goes first. With kids, an adult usually goes down first to steady the ladder and receive them, which means somebody else has to be with the child at the top.
Buy one rated for the height and the weight, and look for a UL listing on the box.
An honest limit worth saying out loud: a rope or chain escape ladder is hard for young children, older adults, and anyone with a mobility or strength limitation. If that describes someone in an upstairs bedroom, the better answer is usually to move that person's bedroom to the ground floor.
How is a fire escape plan different in an apartment or high-rise?
The building is the plan. In a single family home you are getting outside. In a multi-unit building you are getting to a stairwell, and the rules change.
From the USFA's escape plan guidance for apartments and high-rises:
Use the stairs. Do not use the elevator unless the fire department directs you to.
Leave your apartment and close the door behind you. That door is a fire barrier for the whole hallway.
Know 2 stairwells, not one. Walk both of them before you need them, and count doors between your unit and each stairwell so you can find them by feel in smoke.
Know your building's policy. Some high-rises use defend in place, where residents not in the affected area stay put. Ask your building manager which one yours is, because the correct action is different.
Test your unit's alarms yourself. A building fire alarm system is not the same thing as a working smoke alarm inside your unit.
How do you plan for someone who needs help evacuating?
Build the plan around where that person sleeps, and assign the help by name before anything happens.
The USFA's guidance for people with disabilities starts with location: live near an exit, and in an apartment building the ground floor is safest. In a house, that usually means moving a bedroom downstairs, which people resist for years and then wish they had done sooner.
The rest of it:
For anyone deaf or hard of hearing, use smoke alarms with a vibrating pad, a flashing light, or a strobe. A bed shaker under the mattress is the one that works while asleep.
Keep a wheelchair, walker, cane, or transfer board in the same reachable place every night. In the dark, "usually over there" is not a location.
Assign a specific person to assist, and assign a backup for when that person is not home.
Keep the path from that bed to that exit genuinely clear. Measure it against the actual width of the mobility device, not by eye.
Tell your fire department. Many will note in dispatch that a resident needs evacuation assistance, and that gets acted on before the truck arrives.
When to call 911 and when to get professional help
Call 911 from outside, after everyone is out and at the meeting place. Not from inside while you check whether it is really a fire. The USFA's sequence is get out, go to the meeting place, stay there, and call the fire department.
Call 911 immediately, without exception, if:
You see or smell smoke and cannot immediately identify a harmless source
Anyone is missing, trapped, or was in the building when you left
A person has any burn to the face, hands, feet, groin, or a major joint, a large burn, or a burn that looks white, leathery, or charred
Anyone inhaled smoke and is coughing, hoarse, wheezing, confused, or short of breath
A carbon monoxide alarm sounds and anyone has a headache, nausea, dizziness, or confusion. Get out first, then call from outside.
Smoke inhalation is the part people underestimate. Symptoms can lag, and someone who feels fine walking out can deteriorate over the following hours. Two kinds of professional help worth using before anything happens. Most fire departments will do a free home safety visit and will install smoke alarms for free or at low cost, especially for older adults and low income households. Call the non-emergency number and ask. In UL Fire Safety Research Institute testing, a closed bedroom stayed under 100 degrees F with about 100 ppm of carbon monoxide, while an open bedroom hit over 1,000 degrees F with 10,000 ppm. Interconnected alarms let you close the door and still hear an alarm anywhere in the house.
How do I know when to replace a smoke alarm?
Replace the whole unit 10 years from the manufacture date printed on the back, regardless of whether it still chirps when tested. Replace 9 volt batteries at least once a year, including the backup battery in hardwired alarms. A chirp that continues after a fresh battery usually means the unit has reached end of life.

None of this takes a weekend. Walk the house tonight and count your alarms. Flip one over and read the date. Close the bedroom doors before bed. Then put a drill on the calendar for a Saturday morning and let a kid time it. You never know, but you can always be ready.
