How to Season Firewood: Moisture Targets, Stacking, and How Long It Really Takes
The wood you stack this week is for next winter, not this one. Here is the rotation that ends the problem permanently.

Four things drive drying, in this order of impact: splitting, stacking off the ground, air flow, and sun. Cover the top only. A fully tarped stack stays wet.
The permanent fix is a rotation. Buy or cut this year, burn it next year. That single habit solves wet wood forever.
Late August is the week to do this. If you want to know how to season firewood properly, the honest answer is that the wood you stack now is for the winter after this one, and the wood for this winter needed to be stacked last year.
That sounds like bad news. It is actually the good news, because it means the problem is fixable once and then never again.
What moisture content should seasoned firewood be?
Under 20 percent. The EPA's Burn Wise guidance is direct: "Wood burns best at a moisture content of less than 20 percent." The California Air Resources Board Woodburning Handbook defines seasoned firewood as "20 percent moisture or less by weight."
In practice, aim for the 15 to 20 percent band. Here is why that is the useful range rather than "as dry as possible":
Above 20 percent, a meaningful share of your fire's heat goes into boiling water instead of into your house, and the cooler smoke condenses in the chimney as creosote.
Between 15 and 20 percent, you get clean, controllable, efficient burning. This is where properly air dried wood naturally lands in most US climates.
Below about 15 percent, wood tends to off-gas fast and burn hot and quick. It is not dangerous, but it is harder to hold a long, low overnight burn, and you go through more wood.
Air drying will not get you much below 15 percent outdoors anyway, because the wood equilibrates with the humidity around it. That is why 15 to 20 is the real world target and not a compromise.
How do you actually measure firewood moisture?
With a pin type moisture meter pressed into a freshly split face, not the weathered outside of the log. This is the single most common mistake, and it is the reason people believe wood is dry when it is not.

The outer inch of a split log dries fast and rewets fast. It responds to yesterday's weather. The core is where the water actually is. University of Maryland Extension is explicit about the method: "split a piece of wood and test the moisture content in the middle."
Do it like this:
Pick a piece from the middle of the stack, not the sunny end.
Split it open right there.
Push the meter pins into the fresh face, across the grain, near the center of the piece.
Take 2 or 3 readings on different pieces and use the highest one, not the average. Your fire burns the wet piece too.
Let the wood come to roughly room temperature first. Frozen wood reads low and lies to you.
The buying trick most people never use. University of Maryland Extension recommends splitting a random piece and taking a reading BEFORE the truck is unloaded. Once that load is dumped in your driveway, your negotiating position is gone. A meter costs about 20 to 30 dollars and pays for itself the first time it sends a load back.
What does burning wet wood actually cost you?
Heat, chimney safety, and air quality, in that order of how quickly you notice.
Wasted heat
University of Missouri Extension puts real numbers on it. One pound of oven dry hardwood holds about 8,600 BTU of available heat. At 20 percent moisture that same pound delivers about 7,100 BTU. Freshly cut at 75 percent moisture it delivers only about 4,900 BTU, because the fire has to boil off the water before it can do anything useful.
The Washington State Department of Ecology states it as a headline number: "Dry, seasoned wood provides up to 44 percent more heat than fresh cut or wet wood." You are not saving money by burning green wood. You are burning roughly a third more of it for the same warmth.
Creosote and chimney fires
Wet wood burns cool and incomplete. Cool, smoky exhaust condenses on the flue as creosote, which is tar that burns. The University of Tennessee Extension spells out the chain: "incomplete combustion of wet wood produces dirty smoke that can accumulate as creosote in the chimney. If this creosote builds up, it can eventually ignite and cause a chimney fire."
The California Air Resources Board's guidance is blunt about the consequence and the fix: "Chimneys should be cleaned professionally at least once a year to remove creosote buildup. Remember, creosote can fuel a chimney fire that can burn down your house."
Smoke and particulates
That visible smoke is fine particulate pollution, and it does not stay outside. It settles into your neighborhood and back into your own house every time you open the stove door. Washington Ecology notes that wood stoves emit "hundreds of times more air pollution than other sources of heat, such as natural gas or electricity," and that burning wet or fresh cut wood creates "more unhealthy smoke." A properly dry load is the cheapest emissions control you will ever install.
How long does firewood really take to season?
Six months at the absolute fastest, one year for most hardwoods, and 1 to 2 years for the dense stuff. Species matters more than most people expect.
The University of Kentucky Forestry and Natural Resources sets the floor at six months of curing and recommends seasoning at least a year. University of Missouri Extension says most dense hardwoods need "at least one year to season fully" after cutting and splitting. The CARB handbook says 6 to 12 months after splitting, with hardwoods taking longer than softwoods.
The most useful data comes from a University of Maryland Extension study that actually measured stacked wood over time:
Black cherry and hackberry: ready to burn after 6 to 7 months.
Black locust: 7 months or more, and still around 26 percent internal moisture after a full year.
Hickory: the slowest of the group, still averaging 24 percent moisture after one year.
Read that again. Two dense species were still above the 20 percent line after twelve months. Oak behaves the same way. If you are burning oak, plan on two summers, not one.
Why "seasoned" from a seller means almost nothing
There is no legal definition of the word. The University of Tennessee Extension tested firewood sold as seasoned and found an average moisture content of 66 percent, which the authors noted is "only slightly less than the green moisture content of oak of 75 to 80 percent."
That is not a rounding error. That is green wood with a label on it. Assume nothing, bring your meter, and split a piece before it comes off the truck. If you are already stuck with a damp load and cold weather is here, the techniques for getting a fire going with wet wood will carry you through the season, but treat them as a workaround rather than a fix.
What actually makes firewood dry?
Four things, and they are not equally important. In order of impact:
Split it. Bark is a waterproof coat. The tree grew it for exactly that purpose. Splitting exposes the end grain and the open face, which is where water leaves. Kentucky Extension notes that splitting creates "more surface area from which to loose moisture." A round left unsplit can sit for three years and still be wet in the middle. This is the biggest lever by a wide margin, and it is why "split it right away" beats every other tip.
Get it off the ground. Wood stacked on soil wicks moisture up from below and never dries at the bottom. Pallets, scrap 2x4s, cinder blocks, gravel, anything. Kentucky Extension recommends pallets. CARB suggests "a foot or more above the ground."
Give it air flow. Moving air carries the evaporated water away. Stack loosely. Leave gaps between pieces and between rows. Orient the rows so the prevailing wind blows through the ends, not against the face.
Give it sun. Helpful, and the smallest of the four. Sun warms the wood and speeds evaporation, but a shaded windy spot will beat a sunny sheltered one. Cornell Cooperative Extension notes that shaded locations or spots near water can extend drying time considerably.

Should you cover the whole woodpile with a tarp?
No. Cover the top only and leave the sides wide open. This is the mistake that undoes everything else you did right.
The EPA's instruction could not be clearer: "store wood outdoors, off the ground, with only the top covered, covering the sides traps in moisture." Cornell Cooperative Extension gives the same rule for northeastern climates: "cover only the top, leaving the sides exposed so that air can flow through."
Here is the physics in one sentence. Water leaves wood as vapor, and vapor has to go somewhere. A tarp bungeed down over the whole stack turns your woodpile into a terrarium: the wood releases moisture, the tarp traps it, it condenses on the underside, and it drips back onto the wood. A fully wrapped stack can sit above 20 percent for years while the owner assumes it is seasoning.
What works: a sheet of metal roofing, a scrap of plywood, or a tarp weighted on the top course only, overhanging the ends by a few inches, with all four sides open to the wind.
Single row or multi row stacking?
Single rows dry fastest. Cornell recommends stacking loosely and "no more than two layers deep." Every row you add past the first one shields the row behind it from wind and sun.
Single row: best drying, most linear feet needed. Ideal for the current year's drying wood.
Two rows with a gap: a good compromise. Leave 4 to 6 inches between rows so air can move down the channel.
Three or more rows packed tight: only for wood that is already seasoned and is simply being stored.
Stabilize the ends with criss-crossed pieces or with a couple of driven stakes. Cornell suggests end caps built of alternately stacked wood or 2x4s. A stack that falls over in December is a stack you will not restack until March.
Cord, face cord, or rick, so nobody shorts you
Buying firewood by any unit other than the full cord is where people lose money without noticing. The University of Kentucky's definitions:
Full cord: a neatly stacked pile 4 feet high by 8 feet long with pieces 4 feet long. That is 128 cubic feet.
Face cord: 4 feet high by 8 feet long, but only as deep as the pieces are long. A face cord of 16 inch wood is one third of a full cord. A face cord of 24 inch wood is half a cord.
Rick: often used interchangeably with a face cord and commonly about one third of a cord, but Kentucky Extension notes that "regional differences do occur."
So the two questions to ask before money changes hands are: how many cubic feet is that, and how long are the pieces? A "cord" quoted at a suspiciously good price is frequently a face cord of short wood, which is a third of what you thought you were buying. Also note that a randomly dumped pile always looks bigger than the same wood stacked, because you are paying for air. Stack it before you agree it is all there.
Where should you not stack firewood?
Against the house. It is the most common placement and it is the wrong one, for two separate reasons.
University of Kentucky Entomology is direct: do not store firewood "in or against the house or other buildings for long periods," because of the risk of serious structural damage from termites and carpenter ants. A woodpile touching your siding is a covered bridge from the soil to your framing. The same guidance says to avoid stacking directly on the ground, which invites both excess moisture and infestation.
Cornell recommends keeping the woodpile at least 30 feet from the house, with only a small convenience supply kept closer.
The realistic pest picture, from the same Kentucky publication, is worth stating calmly. Firewood commonly carries roundheaded and flatheaded wood borers, powderpost beetles, carpenter ants, and termites, plus shelter seekers like wood cockroaches, wasp queens, spiders, and moths. Most of these emerge when the wood warms indoors, then die. They do not establish infestations in your house. The real risk is not the beetle that crawls out of a log by the stove. It is the stack that sits against the foundation for five years.
And do not spray it. Kentucky Entomology is explicit: "Do not treat firewood with insecticides," because it is unnecessary and burning treated wood can release hazardous fumes.
The rotation that fixes this permanently
Run two stacks and never buy wet wood again.
Stack A is what you burn this winter. It was cut, split, and stacked at least a year ago and it reads under 20 percent.
Stack B is what you are drying now for next winter. You cut or buy it in late summer or fall, split it immediately, and stack it single row on pallets with the top covered.
Next fall, B becomes A, and you build a new B.
That is the entire system. It costs you one extra season of storage space and it means you are never again standing in a cold house in January trying to light something that hisses. Buy in the off season too. Firewood is cheapest in spring and summer, when nobody is thinking about heat, and that is exactly when it has the whole summer ahead of it to dry.
Build the rotation into the same seasonal review where you rotate the rest of your supplies, alongside the water and food in your home shelter-in-place kit. Heat is the one that gets forgotten because it takes twelve months of lead time to fix.
Is kiln dried firewood worth it?
Sometimes, and it is not the same thing as certified heat treated firewood. This distinction matters more than the price difference.
Kiln dried means the wood spent some time in a kiln. As the Don't Move Firewood campaign puts it, that is wood dried "for some unknown period of time at some unknown temperature." There is no legal standard behind the phrase. It usually is genuinely dry, and that is its real value.
Certified heat treated is a regulated process. The common US standard is 60 minutes at 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) at the core, verified under a compliance agreement, and it carries a USDA APHIS seal. That is the only label that legally lets firewood cross state or quarantine lines. Don't Move Firewood states plainly that "kiln dried" is "NOT a meaningful label when it comes to forest pests and diseases."
Kiln dried is worth paying for when you need dry wood right now and have no seasoned stack, when you have no space to season a year ahead (an apartment balcony, a rental), or when you want a small clean supply for an indoor fireplace. It is not worth it as your main winter heat supply. You will pay several times per cord what air dried wood costs, for a result you could have had for free by planning one year ahead.
Do not move firewood long distances
Burn it within about 10 miles of where it was cut, and treat 50 miles as too far. That is the Don't Move Firewood recommendation, and the reason is that a single load can relocate an insect population that took a century to arrive on its own.
Emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle, spotted lanternfly, and spongy moth all hitchhike in firewood. They cannot fly 200 miles. Your truck can. Several states have quarantines and out of state firewood bans with real penalties, so check before you haul wood to a campsite. Buy it where you burn it, or buy certified heat treated with the APHIS seal.
Safe storage, indoor handling, and honest limits
A few rules cover the part of this that can actually hurt you.
Bring in only a day or two of wood at a time. Kentucky Entomology's guidance is to bring in "small amounts of firewood that can be used up in a day or so." Wood stored warm indoors for weeks is what wakes up the beetles.
Keep the indoor stack at least 3 feet from the stove or fireplace, and off the hearth. Radiant heat plus a stray ember is how a woodbox catches.
Never store firewood in a garage against the wall long term, for the same termite and ant reasons as the house.
Have the chimney inspected and cleaned once a year, as CARB recommends. Annual, not "when it seems bad." You cannot see creosote from the living room.
Never burn treated, painted, or painted-adjacent wood. CARB's do-not-burn list includes plastics, rubber, particleboard, plywood, glossy or colored paper, solvents, paint, coal, and treated wood.

Carbon monoxide, and when to call. Any wood burning appliance produces carbon monoxide, and a blocked or creosote-choked flue is one way it backs up into the house. Install a CO alarm on every level and outside sleeping areas, and test it. Headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, or several people (or pets) in the house feeling sick at once and better outdoors are the pattern to act on. When to get help with the wood itself. Hire out felling near structures or power lines, and any tree that is leaning, hung up, or dead. Chainsaw and dropped-tree injuries are a different category of severity from splitting a round, and no amount of self-reliance makes a widow-maker safe. If you can smell smoke in the house, hear a roaring or crackling in the chimney, or see flames or heavy sparks at the chimney top, get out and call 911. That is a chimney fire, not a draft problem.
