Most people carry the wrong signal, or carry the right one and never learn to aim it. Here is the order that actually works.

Search and rescue is a numbers game. A helicopter crew scanning terrain has seconds of eye time on any given acre, and whether they spot you comes down to whether you looked different from everything around you at the exact moment they looked. That is nearly all learning how to signal for rescue is about: contrast, motion, and repetition.

The frustrating part is that most people carry the wrong signal, or carry the right one and never learn to use it. A signal mirror in the bottom of a pack is a piece of glass. A signal mirror you can aim is arguably the best daytime signal there is. Here is the honest hierarchy, the techniques, and the numbers behind each.

What makes a rescue signal actually work?

A signal works when it is different from its surroundings in color, shape, or movement, and when it repeats. Nature has almost no straight lines, no geometric shapes, no bright orange, and no rhythmic flashing. Anything you make that has those qualities reads as "human" from a distance.

Three of anything is the universal distress convention. Three whistle blasts, 3 fires in a triangle or a line, 3 gunshots, 3 flashes of light. The reason is simple: 1 of anything is an accident, 2 is a coincidence, 3 is a message. Searchers are trained on it, and it costs you nothing to use.

Three rules follow from that:

  • Contrast beats size. A 6 foot patch of blaze orange in a green meadow beats a 30 foot pile of the same dead grass the meadow is made of.

  • Motion beats stillness. The human eye is built to catch movement. Waving a bright jacket outperforms lying next to it.

  • Repetition beats a single try. One flash gets dismissed as glare off a lake. Ten flashes in a row gets a second look.

What is the best way to signal for rescue?

Best to worst: a registered beacon or satellite messenger, then a signal mirror, then a whistle, then fire and smoke, then ground to air symbols, then plain visual movement. That order is about range and reliability, not effort.

Notice what is not near the top: shouting, and a cell phone you assume will work. Both fail exactly when you need them.

How does a personal locator beacon actually work?

You press a button, a 406 MHz radio transmits a coded burst with your beacon ID and, on GPS models, your coordinates. Satellites relay it to a ground station, that goes to a mission control center, and a rescue coordination center dispatches help. NOAA says a 406 MHz beacon alerts search and rescue authorities directly within minutes of activation.

The satellite network behind it is Cospas-Sarsat, an international system running since 1982. NOAA reports that more than 50,000 people worldwide have been rescued with its help, and that NOAA satellites contributed to 411 rescues in 2024 alone.

The numbers that matter when you are choosing one:

  • Personal locator beacon (PLB). Handheld, as small as a cell phone, transmits for a minimum of 24 hours after activation. GPS equipped models locate you at the 100 meter level.

  • EPIRB. The marine version. Transmits at least 48 hours, and Category I units float free and self activate when a vessel sinks past 3 to 10 feet of water.

  • ELT. The aircraft version. At least 24 hours of transmission, activated manually or by impact.

  • 121.5 MHz is dead. Satellites have not detected the old 121.5 MHz frequency since 2009. An inherited beacon on that frequency is a paperweight.

Registration is not optional and it is not paperwork. NOAA states plainly that if you buy a new or used United States coded 406 MHz beacon, you must register it as required by law, and confirm the details every 2 years. Registration is what turns an anonymous ping into a rescue: it gives the coordination center your name, your emergency contacts, and your vehicle or vessel description, so they can call your spouse, confirm you are actually missing, and launch instead of investigating a possible false alarm. NOAA cites studies estimating that wider 406 MHz use could save 134 additional lives a year and cut rescue response times by an average of 6 hours.

PLB versus satellite messenger. A PLB is a one purpose distress device with no subscription, a long life battery, and a signal that goes into the government SAR system. A satellite messenger (the two way texting devices) needs a paid subscription, runs through a private monitoring center, and lets you send routine check ins and describe your emergency in words. The messenger is more useful day to day. The PLB is more robust when everything else has failed. Plenty of people carry both, and there is no wrong answer as long as whatever you carry is registered and charged.

How do you aim a signal mirror?

Hold the mirror near your face, sight your target through the hole in the middle, and walk the bright spot of light you see on your own fingers up onto the target. That is the whole technique, and it is the reason a mirror is either brilliant or useless.

A Coast Guard study of daytime visual distress signals found that at half a mile in sunny conditions, observers rated the signal mirror as easy to see, tying the top rated SOLAS flare and beating smoke, orange distress flags, standard hand flares, and LED signals. The same report is honest about the catch: the mirror "is generally effective only in the hands of a capable user," and it does nothing under clouds or light overcast.

Method 1, the sighting hole. Most purpose built signal mirrors have a mesh or hole in the center.

  1. Hold the mirror a few inches from your eye, reflective side out.

  2. Look through the hole at your target, the aircraft, boat, or ridgeline.

  3. You will see a bright spot of light (the aim indicator) floating in the hole or on the mesh.

  4. Tilt the mirror until that bright spot sits directly on the target. The beam is now on them.

  5. Rock the mirror slightly back and forth to flash. Do not hold it steady.

Method 2, the two finger V. This works with any flat mirror, a phone screen, a CD, or a polished belt buckle, and it is the technique almost nobody knows.

  1. Hold your free hand out at arm's length and make a V with 2 fingers.

  2. Frame the target inside that V.

  3. With the other hand, catch sunlight on the mirror and put the bright spot onto your fingers. You will see it clearly on your own skin.

  4. Slide the spot down the V and through the gap onto the target.

  5. Flash repeatedly. Groups of 3 if you can.

Two more things. A mirror flash carries for miles on a clear day because you are aiming a beam of sunlight, not a light of your own, so sweeping the horizon slowly is worth doing even when you see nobody. And practice this in your driveway. It takes 5 minutes to learn and it is nearly impossible to work out for the first time under stress.

Why is a whistle better than shouting?

Because your voice quits and a whistle does not. A few minutes of shouting leaves most people hoarse and unable to make noise at all, while a pealess plastic whistle takes almost no breath, cuts through wind and brush better than a human voice, and works just as well on hour 3 as on minute 1.

Volume is the other half. The University of Illinois Chicago rates the emergency whistle it issues on campus at up to 120 decibels from a 3 chamber design. A shout tops out far below that, and the whistle's pitch is a frequency that does not occur naturally in the woods, so it stands out to a searcher's ear the way orange stands out to their eye.

How to use it:

  • Three sharp blasts, then listen for 60 seconds, then repeat. Listening matters as much as blowing.

  • Buy a pealess whistle. The old style with a ball inside jams when it gets wet or freezes.

  • Put it on the shoulder strap of your pack, not inside it. A whistle you have to dig for is a whistle you will not use.

  • Give one to every kid in the group. The National Park Service tells visitors to pack a whistle and pack a mirror, and to teach lost children the Hug-A-Tree approach of staying put.

What are the ground to air signals?

They are a short international code of symbols you build on the ground for aircraft to read. The 2 that matter most are V, meaning you require assistance, and X, meaning you require medical assistance. The FAA publishes the full ground to air visual code in the Aeronautical Information Manual.

The part most guides skip is how to build one so it reads from 1,000 feet up. Size is what people get wrong. A useful rule of thumb is to make each letter roughly as long as a car and each stroke several feet wide, then go bigger if you have the space and material. A person sized X is invisible from a search aircraft.

  • Pick the most open ground you have. Meadow, sandbar, snowfield, beach. Under tree canopy you are wasting effort.

  • Use maximum contrast. Dark material on snow or sand. Bright gear, tarps, or green boughs on dry brown grass. Rocks on turf.

  • Keep the lines straight and the angles hard. Straight is the signal. Wobbly lines read as terrain.

  • Build in shadow. Trenches scraped in sand or snow, or material piled several inches high, throw shadows that make the symbol readable at low sun angles even when color contrast is weak.

  • Make it permanent. A symbol on the ground works while you sleep, gather firewood, or tend an injured person. That is its real advantage over everything else on this list.

How should you use fire and smoke to signal?

Build 3 fires in a triangle or a straight line if you can manage it, and change your smoke color to contrast with the background. Dark smoke against snow, a light sky, or pale sand. White or gray smoke against dark timber and shadowed terrain.

Green vegetation, damp moss, and wet leaves piled on a hot fire produce pale smoke. Rubber, oil soaked rags, and plastic produce black smoke. Keep the smoke material stacked and dry beside the fire so you can throw it on the second you hear an engine, because a smoke column takes a minute or two to build and aircraft do not linger.

Two honest limits. Smoke disappears in wind, and it is close to useless on a hazy day or in a valley holding an inversion. And in dry country you can start a wildfire that puts other people in danger, so clear a wide ring down to mineral soil first. What should you do when an aircraft is overhead?

Do:

  • Move into the largest clear area you can reach in seconds.

  • Flash the mirror at the aircraft, sweeping across it, not once but continuously.

  • Wave a bright item with both arms, big slow arcs above your head.

  • Keep signaling until the aircraft is out of sight, and keep your signals ready. Searchers often fly a grid and come back.

Do not:

  • Do not run toward the aircraft or toward a landing zone. You become a hazard and you leave your own signals behind.

  • Do not turn off a beacon because a plane flew over. Leave it transmitting until you are physically with rescuers.

  • Do not put the mirror away because the pilot waved. A rock or a dip in the ridge can hide you again 20 seconds later.

  • Do not point a laser at a cockpit. It can blind a pilot and it is a federal crime.

Should you stay put or try to walk out?

Stay put, in almost every case, once you have told anyone you are in trouble or you know you will be reported overdue. A search is built around a last known point. Every mile you move multiplies the area they have to cover and can take you out of a sector they already cleared. Weather is part of that decision, since aircraft cannot fly a search through a storm, so being able to read clouds, wind shifts, and falling pressure without a forecast tells you whether you have a flying window this afternoon or a night to sit through first.

The National Park Service's own guidance for someone who cannot reach 911 is short: await rescue. The Hug-A-Tree method taught to children is the same principle in kid language: pick a tree, stay with it, make noise.

Move only when staying put is more dangerous than moving. That means:

  • You are in immediate danger from water, fire, rockfall, or exposure.

  • Nobody knows where you are and nobody will report you missing, so no search will start.

  • You can see a road, a structure, or a shoreline you can reliably reach.

If you do move, leave a clear note or an arrow of rocks at your camp giving the date, the time, your condition, and your direction of travel. Then mark your route so a searcher can follow it forward.

Can you call 911 with no bars?

Often yes. The FCC requires wireless carriers to transmit all 911 calls to a dispatch center regardless of whether you subscribe to that carrier's service. In practice that means your phone will try any tower it can reach, including a competitor's, for a 911 call even when the bars show nothing for your own network.

Some practical points:

  • Try the call even when it looks hopeless. An old deactivated phone in a glovebox can still dial 911 for the same reason.

  • Say your location first. If the call drops after 5 seconds, that is the sentence that mattered. The FCC also notes the dispatcher may not have your number, so call back if you get cut off.

  • Text to 911 exists, but not everywhere. The FCC is clear that it is only available in certain locations and that a voice call is still the most reliable option. Try voice first, then text.

  • Get high, then hold still. A ridge or open clearing can find a signal a drainage never will.

  • Kill the battery drain. Airplane mode between attempts, screen dark, phone kept warm inside your jacket. A cold battery dies fast.

Do not build a plan around any of this. The National Park Service specifically recommends a personal locator beacon for backcountry areas that do not have cell service, and that recommendation exists precisely because phones are not dependable out there.

What should you leave with someone before you go?

A written trip plan, given to a person who is not coming with you. This is the cheapest and most effective piece of rescue equipment in existence, because it is what starts a search at all.

The National Park Service says to complete a trip plan that lists where you will be hiking, your contact information, when you plan to arrive and return, and who is with you. Buffalo National River puts the same idea more bluntly: leave a detailed itinerary and map with somebody at home who can report you overdue if necessary.

Include all of this:

  • Trailhead, route, and planned campsites, with a map photo.

  • Vehicle description, plate number, and where it will be parked.

  • Everyone in the party, with ages and any medical conditions.

  • Your return time, and the specific time your contact should call authorities if they have not heard from you.

  • What signaling gear you are carrying, so searchers know to watch for a mirror flash or listen for a whistle.

That last line is the one people leave off, and it changes how a search is run. Pair it with your household's family emergency communication plan so the same contact information works for every kind of emergency.

When should you call for help instead of handling it yourself?

Earlier than feels comfortable. Call 911 or activate your beacon as soon as you have a serious injury, a medical emergency, someone who cannot walk out, or a situation that will get worse before dark. Waiting to see if it improves is the single most common mistake, and it moves a daylight rescue into a night rescue.

Activate immediately for any of these:

  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, a head injury with confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, or someone who is unresponsive.

  • A broken bone, a bad ankle, or an injury that stops anyone from walking out on their own.

  • Signs of hypothermia or heat illness that are not improving with the obvious fixes.

  • Anyone separated from the group and not found within a short, agreed search window.

  • A suspected poisoning or bad reaction. Poison Control is 1-800-222-1222 and it is free and staffed 24 hours.

Nobody bills you for embarrassment. Search and rescue teams would far rather respond to a call that turns out fine than start a recovery 2 days later. If you activate a beacon and then get yourself out, contact the authorities so they can stand the search down.
