Morning.
This week's batch is mostly the unglamorous stuff: the valves you have walked past a thousand times, the water math that everybody stops halfway through, and an edge that never quite got sharp. None of it needs special gear, and most of it fits in an afternoon. That is usually a sign you are looking at the right kind of prep.
3 quick things this week
Your gas shutoff is the one utility you probably should not touch, even with a storm coming. Once it is off, only the gas company gets to turn it back on.
1 gallon per person per day is only half the answer. The other half is the 500 plus pounds that number puts on your floor.
If home dried fruit molds 2 months later, the step that got skipped happens after the fruit already looks finished.
This week
We are a few days past the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, and September is National Preparedness Month. That combination makes this a good stretch for the boring jobs, the ones nobody does well in the dark with the wind up.
Find the shutoffs. Top off the water. Put real labels on the breaker panel. And if you garden, this is the last clean window to pull seed off your best plants before the weather turns on you.
How to Shut Off Your Gas, Water, and Electricity
There are 3 places in your house where you can stop a problem from getting worse: the gas meter, the main water valve, and the breaker panel. Most people could find maybe 1 of them in the dark. I would like you to be able to find all 3 by the end of the week.
Two of the three you can use freely, practice on, and turn back on yourself. The third one is different, and that is the part that catches people out. Shut it off and you are not the one who gets to reopen it, which is why the real advice on it is a lot narrower than most storm checklists let on.
The article walks the whole thing: where each one usually hides, which way the handle turns, what you need in your hand to do it, and the order to flip breakers so the power coming back does not come back as a surprise.
How Much Water to Store Per Person
1 gallon per person per day. Everybody knows that number. Almost nobody finishes the arithmetic.
Run it out to 2 weeks for a family of 4 with a dog and you land on a figure that changes where you are willing to put the stuff. Water is heavy, and heavy things have to sit somewhere the floor can carry them. That is the part that turns a nice plan into jugs you actually have room for.
We laid out the per person math, the pet math, the hot weather adjustment that a lot of people miss, and what a full 55 gallon drum really puts on one square foot of your house. Bring a tape measure to this one.
Insect Bites and Stings First Aid
Two things about bites and stings tend to run backwards. The tick trick almost everyone repeats makes the bite worse, and the sting that swells up like a softball is usually the one that is fine.
What actually matters is a short list of signs that turn an annoying afternoon into a 911 call, and they are not the ones people watch for. Swelling is not it. Neither is how much it hurts. There is also one very common first move that the allergy specialists say flat out not to make.
The CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the allergy folks are all clear on this, and the article lays the steps out with their guidance attached. Worth reading before the next time somebody walks in scratching.

The 3 you are hunting for. Gas meter, main water valve, breaker panel. Twenty minutes with a flashlight and you never have to look for them again.
How to Dehydrate Fruit for Long-Term Storage
Most drying guides stop at leathery and pliable. The fruit looks done, into the jar it goes, and 2 months later there is fuzz on the apple slices.
The step that decides which way that goes happens after the fruit already looks finished. It takes about a week, it costs nothing, and skipping it is the single most common reason home dried fruit does not make it to winter.
We covered the temperature every extension service lands on, the dips that keep apples and pears from going brown, an honest doneness test, and that last quiet step. If you have a dehydrator gathering dust in a cupboard, this is the week to get it out.
How to Save Seeds From Vegetables
Your zucchini and your pumpkin are the same species. Once you know that, most of the mystery about seed coming back wrong quietly disappears.
Some crops you can save this year with almost no effort and get back exactly what you planted. Others need more distance between varieties than a whole backyard can give you, and no amount of care makes up the difference. Knowing which pile a plant falls into is most of the skill.
The article sorts the easy crops from the hard ones, gives the extension isolation distances, covers the tomato ferment and why it is not optional, and shows the simple dryness test that decides whether seed is still alive next spring.
How to Sharpen a Knife
Here is the thing that fixes most people's sharpening. You are probably stopping right before the knife gets sharp.
There is a physical tell that says the edge is finally ready for the next step, and if you have never checked for it, you have been guessing the whole time. It takes about 2 seconds to feel for, and it is the difference between 20 minutes of work and an hour of frustration with nothing to show.
We covered the angle for a kitchen knife versus a field blade, the grit order that saves you real time, how to check for the tell, and the one kind of sharpener to keep away from any knife you intend to keep.
Worth a watch
Saving seed is only half of the cycle. The other half is getting those seeds to come up next spring, and Brooke Edmunds of Oregon State University Extension has a plain, unhurried walkthrough of starting your own vegetables from seed. No gear you do not already have, and nothing sold to you at the end.
Start your own vegetables from seeds, Oregon State University Extension.
That is the issue. If one thing in here was useful, the best thing you can do is forward it to the one person in your life who would actually go find their water valve this weekend.
And if somebody sent you this, you can get it in your own inbox twice a week, free.
You never know, but you can always be ready.
