Good morning.

7 new guides went live since Thursday, and I did not plan the thread that runs through them. Almost every one turned on something I was fairly sure I already knew, and had slightly wrong.

Nothing dramatic. Small, quiet corrections, of the kind that only surface when you go read what the source actually says instead of what everybody repeats.

3 quick things this week

  • You can let a child sleep after a minor head bump. The American Academy of Pediatrics says so plainly. What matters instead is an adult in the house for 24 hours, checking every 2 to 3 hours that they wake, move, and respond normally.

  • Stored water does not go off with time. It goes off with heat. Antimony in PET bottles stayed well under EPA's 6 parts per billion limit for 8 weeks at room temperature. At 176 degrees F it blew past the limit in 2 to 3 days. A closed car in August gets there easily.

  • A bigger neighborhood plan is a worse one. Washington State's Map Your Neighborhood program caps a group at 15 to 20 homes, because past that no single volunteer can walk the area and report back, and the plan quietly becomes a mailing list.

This week

Two things are landing at once. Peaches and the last of the berries are at their best and cheapest right now, which makes the next 2 or 3 weekends the water bath canning window for most of the country.

And school is either back or about to be, which reliably starts the season of fevers, coughs that sound worse at 2am, and the question of whether this one is worth a phone call.

Both are on the list below. If you only do 2 things: put bottled lemon juice on the shopping list, and put your pediatrician's after-hours number in your phone under a name you can find half asleep.

Common Child Emergencies

"Do not let them fall asleep." Most of us absorbed that one somewhere and never went back to check it.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says the opposite, and says it plainly: after a minor head injury, it is okay for your child to go to sleep. The real work is quieter. An adult stays with them for 24 hours and checks every 2 to 3 hours that they wake, move, and respond the way they normally do.

That is the shape of the whole piece. Not a list of things to worry about, but the specific numbers that change the decision. 100.4 degrees F rectal in a baby 3 months or younger is a call to the pediatrician even with nothing else wrong. Fewer than 6 wet diapers in a day is the dehydration marker. And there are 6 croup symptoms where the answer stops being a humidifier and becomes 911.

Two pears sit side by side at the market. One is safe in a boiling water bath exactly as it is. The other is not, and nothing about looking at them tells you which is which.

European pears are fine. Asian pears are not, and NCHFP says every home canned Asian pear needs acid added first, 1 tablespoon of bottled lemon juice per pint. The reason is a single number that quietly sorts your whole harvest into 2 piles: pH 4.6.

Below that line, boiling water at 212 degrees F is enough. Above it, boiling water is mostly theater, because it kills the bacteria and leaves the spores. Once that clicks, the altitude tables and the tomato exception stop being arbitrary rules to memorize and start being obvious.

Home Emergency Kit Checklist

1 gallon per person per day. Everybody knows that one, and it is correct as far as it goes.

What it does not include is washing. That figure covers drinking and food preparation only, so a family of 4 planning 2 weeks at home writes down 56 gallons and has quietly planned a fortnight without rinsing a dish or a child. The realistic number is closer to 100.

And water is not even the thing that breaks first. If the water is off, the toilet becomes an urgent problem in about 12 hours, and it is the one item on the whole list that almost nobody has a plan for.

I had this one backwards for years. I assumed stored water went off with time, so I rotated on a calendar and felt organized about it.

Time is not really the variable. Temperature is. Researchers tracking antimony leaching out of PET bottles found levels stayed comfortably under EPA's 6 parts per billion limit for 8 weeks at room temperature, and even at 104 degrees F. At 176 degrees F they blew past it in 2 to 3 days. A closed car in August reaches that, and so do plenty of attics.

Which reframes the question entirely. The container still matters, but where you put it matters more. And "food grade," "BPA free," and "NSF certified" each answer a much narrower question than most of us assume, including me.

Bigger is worse. That is the part I did not see coming.

Washington State's Map Your Neighborhood program caps a block group at 15 to 20 homes, and the reason is not social, it is logistical. Past that, no single volunteer can walk the whole area and report back inside a useful window. The plan degrades into a mailing list, which makes everyone feel prepared without anyone actually checking on anyone.

There is also a piece of hardware sitting in the middle of all this that costs nothing: a card in a window. Get one rule right about how it is used, and an empty window stops being a question mark and becomes information.

Livestock Water Requirements

Ask anyone why animals drink more in August and they will say the heat. Reasonable, and not the main driver.

Fresh pasture runs as much as 80 percent moisture. Dry hay is 10 to 15 percent. So the day you move animals off green grass and onto hay, demand can jump 30 to 50 percent before the thermometer contributes anything at all. Heat then stacks on top: Oklahoma State puts cattle at roughly 1 extra gallon per head for every 10 degrees F above 40.

The other thing worth knowing before a dry spell is that drought does not just reduce the water. It concentrates what is in it. Sulfate, nitrate, and dissolved solids all climb in the same weeks the animals are drinking the most, which is a quieter problem than an empty tank and a good deal harder to notice.

Celestial Navigation Basics

Polaris is not bright. That is exactly why people cannot find it.

The University of Illinois puts it at magnitude 2.02, the 48th brightest star in the sky. Anyone scanning for a beacon looks straight past it. What makes it findable has nothing to do with brightness. It is that nothing else of similar brightness sits anywhere near it, and that it barely moves while the rest of the sky wheels around.

Find it and you have north to within about 3 to 5 degrees with your eye alone. Stack your fists from the horizon up to it and you have also just read your latitude, which is a faintly absurd thing to be able to do with your hands in the back yard on a warm night.

That is the arithmetic behind the shelter in place guide, written the way you would actually write it on the back of an envelope.

100 gallons sounds like a warehouse problem right up until you convert it into objects. It is 2 food grade 55 gallon drums standing in a corner of the garage. For most households that is the entire solution, bought once.

The gap the card leaves open is the last line. The 12 hour toilet problem is not a water problem, which is why adding gallons will not touch it. The setup that does fix it uses no water at all and costs less than a tank of gas, and it is the single cheapest upgrade on this week's list.

Worth a watch
