The practical takeaway: nothing in that list cares whether the heat came from a wall oven or a pile of charcoal. It only cares that the heat arrived, evenly enough, for long enough.

How do you bake bread in a Dutch oven on a stovetop?

Put a trivet or a folded ring of foil in the bottom of the pot so the dough is lifted off the metal that is touching the flame, then cover it and run the burner low. Without that gap, the bottom of your loaf is a direct contact griddle and it will scorch before the middle is set.

Fire and coals

The USDA Forest Service gives the campfire basics. Scrape away litter, duff, and burnable material within a 10 foot diameter circle.
