Why Chickens Stop Laying in Fall: Molt, Daylight, and How to Keep Eggs Coming

Every September the same question shows up from first-year chicken keepers: why do chickens stop laying in fall? You were getting 5 eggs a day in July, you are getting 1 now, there are feathers all over the coop floor, and nothing obvious is wrong. In almost every case the answer is one of two normal things happening at once, and the fix is either patience or a light bulb. But there is a short list of other causes worth ruling out first, because a couple of them are real problems that will not fix themselves. Here is how to tell which one you have.

Why do chickens stop laying in fall?

Because of molt and day length, and usually both at the same time. Oregon State Extension's publication on the question lists 7 causes total: decreasing day length, molt, broodiness, flock health and disease, age, poor nutrition, and stress. In September and October the first two dominate.

They are separate processes that happen to overlap. Molt is the annual replacement of feathers. It is hormonal, it is normal, and it takes so much protein and energy that laying stops while it runs. Declining day length is the light signal that drives the whole reproductive cycle, and once it falls below roughly 14 hours the cycle shuts down whether the bird is molting or not.

The reason they land together is not a coincidence. Shortening days are one of the cues that triggers molt in the first place, which is why a whole flock often goes ragged within a couple of weeks of each other.

What that means practically: molt you wait out, day length you can choose to fix. Those are different decisions and they need to be made separately.

What is a molt, and how long does it last?

A molt is the annual shed and regrowth of a hen's entire feather coat, and how long it lasts depends on what kind of layer she is. Mississippi State University Extension gives the two ranges: late molters finish in 2 to 3 months, early molters take 4 to 6 months. The MSD Veterinary Manual says backyard flocks typically molt for 3 to 4 months and sometimes longer, and that all hens should molt at least once a year.

The counterintuitive part is worth sitting with, because it changes how you read your own flock. The hen who looks worst is usually your best layer. Mississippi State lays out the contrast directly:

  • Late molters have been in production 12 to 14 months before they molt, are "generally the better laying hens," look "more ragged and tattered," shed feathers quickly in groups, and get back to laying sooner because the feathers regrow simultaneously.

  • Early molters have been laying only a few months, are "generally poorer layers," keep a "smoother, better-groomed appearance," drop only a few feathers at a time, and take much longer to come back.

So the hen who looks like she lost a fight in mid September and is back to laying by Thanksgiving is doing exactly what a productive bird does. The one who stays tidy and takes until February is the one you would cull first if you were culling.

Feathers also drop in a predictable order, which is one of the easiest ways to confirm you are looking at a molt. Mississippi State: "The feathers are lost from the head first, followed in order by those on the neck, breast, body, wings, and tail." Within the wing, primary flight feathers go before secondaries. A bird that goes bald starting at the head and works backward is molting. A bird missing feathers only around her vent and belly is a different story, and we get to that below.

First-year birds usually skip this. A pullet who started laying in June will often lay straight through her first fall and winter and hold her first real molt until the following autumn, when she is around 18 months old.

How do you tell a molt from a sick hen?

By where the feathers are missing, what her comb looks like, and whether she is still eating. A molting hen is uncomfortable and unproductive but fundamentally fine. A sick hen looks sick.

Signs it is a normal molt:

  • Feather loss starts at the head and neck and progresses backward in the order above.

  • Pinfeathers. Short, waxy, blood-filled quills pushing through the skin. These are new feathers and they are the single clearest confirmation of molt. They are also tender, which is why a molting hen may not want to be picked up.

  • Pale, shrunken comb and wattles. When a hen stops laying, her comb often fades and shrinks. That tracks with being out of production, not with illness.

  • Normal appetite, normal droppings, normal behavior. She still comes running for scratch. She still scratches and dust bathes.

Signs it is not a molt and needs a closer look:

  • Feathers missing only at the vent and belly with the head and neck untouched. Mississippi State Extension says missing feathers in the abdominal and vent area point to "external parasites such as the northern fowl mite or poultry lice."

  • Feathers missing on the back and head of one hen only. That is usually a rooster's mating pattern, not molt.

  • Bare skin with no pinfeathers coming in after several weeks. Molt regrows. Pecking, parasites, and nutritional problems do not.

  • Any respiratory sign, gasping, an extended neck, lameness, or a bird sitting hunched and away from the flock. That is not molt. The University of Minnesota Extension flags gasping with an extended neck and paralysis of the legs and wings as signs needing professional evaluation.

What should you feed a hen through molt?

More protein, temporarily, and no gimmick supplements. Feathers are built almost entirely from protein, so a hen regrowing a full coat has a real, short-term protein demand that a standard layer ration was not designed for.

The nutritional detail that actually matters is the amino acid, not the crude protein number. Mississippi State Extension is specific about it: "The feathers of birds contain high levels of a subunit of proteins called 'methionine'," and methionine is "one of only a few amino acids that contain sulfur, and sulfur is a major constituent of feathers." The Merck Veterinary Manual puts the methionine requirement for a brown-egg layer at 0.36 percent of the diet at normal feed intake, alongside 18.0 percent protein.

For context, the Poultry Extension network says layer diets should contain at least 14 percent protein and that 16 percent is more common. Penn State Extension puts layer rations at 16 to 18 percent and starter feed at 18 to 20 percent. Feed is the largest running cost in any flock, so if the bill is what stings each fall, it is worth looking at what you can realistically grow and store yourself.

So the practical move through molt is:

  • Switch to a higher protein feed for 6 to 8 weeks. An 18 to 20 percent starter, grower, or all flock feed does the job. Go back to layer feed when the feathers are in.

  • Offer oyster shell free choice separately. Non-layer feeds carry roughly 1.2 percent calcium instead of the 2.5 to 3.5 percent in a laying mash, so the hens still laying need somewhere to get it. Free choice oyster shell lets each bird take what she needs.

  • Stop throwing scratch grains. This is the one most people get backward. Mississippi State warns that adding grains like corn to a complete feed "can reduce methionine intake below adequate levels for proper feather development." Corn is the opposite of what a molting bird needs. Treats dilute the ration exactly when it should be at its strongest.

  • Skip the molt supplements. You do not need a specialty product. Cat food, dried mealworms sold by the tub, and "feather fixer" additives are all just protein you can buy far more cheaply as a bag of grower feed.

Keep water in front of them constantly. The University of Minnesota Extension calls continual access to clean, fresh water "a critical part of a chicken's diet," and a 6-pound hen eats roughly 3 pounds of feed a week, all of which needs water to process. If you keep other animals too, the daily water requirements by species are worth knowing before the first hard freeze.

How many hours of daylight do hens need to keep laying?

About 14, with 16 producing the maximum. Below roughly 14 hours the reproductive cycle switches off, and that threshold is why fall production falls off a cliff rather than tapering gently.

The numbers are consistent across sources. University of Nebraska Extension: "Approximately 14 hours of light per day is required to stimulate a hen to lay an egg," with maximum production at approximately 16 hours, and light below 14 hours "will cause her reproductive cycle to shut down." The Poultry Extension network gives a minimum of 14 hours of light per day, rising to 16 late in the production cycle. Penn State says 14 to 16 hours for maximum year-round production. The MSD Veterinary Manual gives 13 to 16 hours per 24-hour period.

Now compare that to reality. Oregon State Extension notes that natural day length there runs from nearly 16 hours in summer down to just over 8 hours in winter. Most of the continental US crosses below 14 hours of daylight sometime in late August or September and does not come back above it until April. That is the whole mechanism. Your hens are not broken, they are responding to the sun exactly as their biology tells them to.

One useful piece of context for expectations: an egg takes about 26 hours to form, from ovulation through the shell gland, so even a hen laying at full tilt shifts her lay time later each day and eventually skips one. A hen who lays 6 eggs a week in peak season is doing well.

Should you put a light in the coop?

It works, and it is a legitimate choice, but there is a real argument on the other side and it is not sentimental. Here is both cases honestly.

If you light the coop, light it in the morning and keep it dim. One 25 to 40 watt bulb per 100 square feet is plenty.

The case for lighting. It is effective and cheap. Adding light to reach 14 hours restarts the cycle in most healthy hens within 2 to 4 weeks. You get eggs through winter, your feed cost per egg goes down, and the birds are not harmed by the light itself. Commercial and small flock operations have used lighting programs for decades.

The case against lighting. A hen has a fixed supply of eggs and you cannot add to it. The Poultry Extension network's anatomy reference is blunt about it: "The maximum number of eggs a hen can lay is determined when it hatches because no new ova form after the chick hatches." A pullet hatches with tens of thousands of ova and most never develop far enough to be ovulated, so in practice she is not going to run out. But the argument is really about rest, not arithmetic. Oregon State Extension actually recommends allowing a 6-week lighting shutdown during a hen's second winter so she can molt completely, and the MSD Veterinary Manual says all hens should molt at least once a year. Pushing a hen through a molt with light is working against a process her body is trying to complete.

There is a middle position that most experienced keepers land on, and it is the one I would suggest: let the first-year birds lay through on natural light, give the older hens the winter off, and if you light at all, light the flock only after the molt is finished. A hen in full molt is not going to lay regardless of how bright the coop is, so lighting during molt just costs electricity.

How do you set up coop lighting correctly?

Morning light, on a timer, low wattage, and never shortened. Get any of those wrong and you either fail to work or you cause a problem.

  1. Add the light in the morning, not the evening. This is the rule people break. University of Nebraska Extension: "Supplemental light should be added during the morning hours, as sudden darkness can cause chickens to panic and pile up in a corner." Chickens cannot see well in the dark and will not find the roost on their own once the light snaps off. Penn State's version: put the lights on a time clock in the morning and "let the birds go to roost with the natural sunset."

  2. Use a timer, not a switch. Manual switching is inconsistent, and inconsistency is worse than no light at all. Nebraska Extension calls a timer "a viable and cost effective remedy" for getting the hours right without wasting power.

  3. Keep it dim. Penn State: "One 25- to 40-watt bulb located above the feed and water area at ceiling height for each 100 square feet of pen." Poultry Extension puts the intensity target at about half a footcandle after brooding, and warns that "strong light intensity is generally not required and can, in fact, result in bird stress and increased incidences of feather pecking and cannibalism." A shop light blazing at 5,000 lumens is not better. It is worse.

  4. Use a warm bulb. Nebraska recommends warm wavelength (orange or reddish) light rather than cool wavelength bulbs.

  5. Never shorten the day once you have started. Penn State is unambiguous: "Never decrease the lighting period on birds in production, or they will stop laying." Set your timer to a fixed morning-on time and leave it. Do not shift it around, and do not let a power outage or a dead timer knock the schedule back.

  6. Light the feeders and waterers. Nebraska says position fixtures above the feeders and waterers and avoid shaded areas in the house. Light drives feed intake as well as the reproductive cycle.

Math for setting the timer: total light needed minus natural daylight equals the hours you add. If sunrise is 7:15 a.m. and sunset is 5:30 p.m., you have about 10 hours 15 minutes of natural light and need roughly 4 hours added. Set the timer to come on at 3:15 a.m. and go off at sunrise. As natural days keep shortening through December, the on-time creeps earlier. Recheck it monthly.

One safety note that has nothing to do with eggs: use a proper fixture with a guard, keep cords out of reach, and never hang a heat lamp in a coop full of dry bedding and dust. Coop fires are the single most common serious accident in backyard poultry keeping, and they almost always start with a heat lamp, not a light bulb.

What else stops fall laying that is not molt or daylight?

Six things, and the first one is the one people miss most.

  • Mites and lice. Part the feathers around the vent and look. The Merck Veterinary Manual says northern fowl mites are "typically found by parting feathers in the vent area," with thick crusty skin, severe scabbing, and soiled feathers, and that "even moderate infestations (> 100 mites/bird) can cause decreased egg production." They complete a life cycle in 5 to 12 days, so a light infestation becomes a heavy one fast, and they are most active in cool weather. Chicken mites (Dermanyssus gallinae) are different: they feed only at night and hide during the day, so Poultry Extension says inspect nest boxes, cracks, and where roost poles meet their supports. Adults can survive up to 6 months without feeding, which is why treating the birds alone never solves it. Treat the housing on the same schedule as the birds.

  • A broody hen. The MSD Veterinary Manual defines a broody hen simply as "a hen that stops laying eggs so that it can sit on eggs." She will flatten out in the nest box, puff up and growl when you reach under her, and stay there. Broodiness in fall is less common than in spring but it happens.

  • A new bird, a predator scare, or a move. Oregon State lists stress as one of its 7 causes for a reason. Introducing new hens rewrites the pecking order and can knock production down for a week or two. A raccoon at the run at 2 a.m. that never got in can still stop the flock laying. So can a dog, a hawk overhead, or a coop rearrangement.

  • Hidden nests. The simplest explanation and worth ruling out before anything else. Free-ranging hens who suddenly "stop laying" in September are often laying under the deck or in a hedge. Confine the flock to the run for 3 days and see what shows up in the nest boxes. Make sure you have enough of them: UMN Extension says one nest box per 4 to 5 birds, and Penn State asks for a minimum of 4 boxes with one 12 inch by 12 inch nest per 4 hens, set 24 inches off the floor and away from the roosts.

  • Feed dilution. If the flock is getting a lot of scratch, kitchen scraps, or garden waste, the actual protein and calcium they eat is well below what the bag says. Treats should stay under about 10 percent of total intake.

  • Age. Production drops every year, permanently. Oregon State says hens "produce well until they are 2 to 3 years old, and then egg production declines." Poultry Extension says many home flocks produce on and off for 3 to 4 years with declining production annually, and UMN puts peak production in the first 2 years. Penn State's benchmark for a commercial flock is staying above 60 percent production until about 80 weeks of age. A 4-year-old hen laying 2 eggs a week is not sick. She is 4.

When is a hen that stops laying a veterinary problem?

When she has symptoms beyond not laying. I am not a veterinarian and this is not a diagnosis, so the standard here comes straight from the extension and veterinary sources: a bird that looks sick needs a professional, not a home remedy.

Call a veterinarian or your state veterinary diagnostic laboratory if you see:

  • Respiratory signs. Gasping, an extended neck, rattling breathing, or discharge from the eyes or nostrils. University of Minnesota Extension notes that severe infectious laryngotracheitis can cause suffocation, and that infectious coryza "reduces egg laying by 10 to 40 percent."

  • Paralysis or a bird that cannot reach food and water. UMN lists "paralysis of the legs and wings" as a sign of Marek's disease and something needing urgent evaluation.

  • Sudden unexplained death, especially in young, apparently healthy birds.

  • A hen straining, standing penguin-upright, or with a swollen firm abdomen. Reproductive problems in hens are common and they are not something to wait out.

  • Several birds sick at once. UMN advises that for suspected E. coli affecting multiple birds, "working with a veterinarian and taking a culture sample may help with treatment."

UMN's own instruction is the simple one: "If you suspect disease in your flock, consult a veterinarian or the University of Minnesota's Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory." Every state has an equivalent lab, usually attached to the land grant university, and most will take samples from backyard flocks for a modest fee. Your state extension office can point you to it. If you see sudden deaths in multiple birds, contact your state animal health official as well, because that reporting matters for tracking avian influenza.

One more thing worth knowing before you treat anything yourself: many products are not approved for laying hens, and some require an egg withdrawal period. Merck notes that resistance to pyrethrins and pyrethroids in northern fowl mites is widespread, and that an oral fluralaner solution approved in July 2025 carries zero days withdrawal in egg-laying chickens. Read the label, and ask before you dose.

If it is September, the feathers are flying, and the birds are eating and acting normal, you almost certainly have nothing to fix. Check for mites, put a higher protein bag in the feeder, decide on purpose whether you want winter eggs or a rested flock, and wait. The eggs come back. And the bedding you strip out of the coop while you are waiting is next spring's fertilizer, as long as you compost the manure safely first.

You never know, but you can always be ready.
